Bangladés.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

Almost 5 years later I have learned that branding is more than just buy a successful product such a phone, a jacket, a car or even, a singular house. Creating branding is a powerful and exciting exercise to understand and influence the world around you. Maybe we cannot change the whole world but we can change the way to interact between us within our comfortable zone.

Once of the first person who talk with me about this topic was my Singaporean friend called Elvina Chua Hwee Chean<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">, so I can just to thank to her for accepting my invitation to share her working experience in this matter in my 2wTree blog. Here she goes.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
What is branding? To me, branding is more than what you are. It is a style which is carefully crafted out through a series of processes that you want others to perceive you as, be it your customer or the public. Why do I say that? Let me elaborate by using Mac Donald as an example. Today, if I am going to say the Mac Donald brand is about delivering fast food and burgers, I may not be quite right. McDonald's brandmission states that it aims to be their customers' favorite place and way to eat and drink. Just look at the juicy burger patties and mouth watering tomatoes that are featured in their commercial and their attempt to lure young minds into their restaurants by giving them free balloons and access to their indoor playground. This is what I meant by generating the kind of Mac Donald they want the public to see and not just any simple burger restaurant. It does not matter if they are serving you genetically modified french fries or sugar packed soda that are harmful to your health. A lovable brand by all, “I’m lovin’ it”. That is branding.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> The branding collaboration. I have all along been a sales and marketing person in a B2 B environment. That says, I am not a brand guru but would not mind sharing my brand marketing experiences. Let us talk about one of a marketing campaign I did alongside with Miguel for my ex‐company. The company had recently undergone a re‐branding exercise where the brand visuals (logo, taglines, brochures, websites, stationary, etc ) were changed. On the year the new logo was launched, a Christmas card design competition was held internally to engage the staff on the new visual element. Miguel nailed it as his design was well suited to the tone of the new logo and branding mission.

Much as it was designed to be a Christmas card, it was no ordinary card. It was unique and captured the new brand essence of the company. Outlines of buildings that housed the technology of the company were used to display the strength of the company‐ its ability to do big projects which was important in its field. It was quite similar to the Mac Donald story that the company was trying to market its value and not so much of the product it was selling. This was especially important in modern day marketing as by objectively simplifying the branding message, it made it easier for the client to understand what value the company can offer that could benefit them in their projects.

Traditionally, Christmas cards were designed in colours of red or blue, the company’s Christmas card was deliberately designed in green to further emphasis on the fact that the company was a green company. A Christmas tree was configured on the right using the company’s panache mark. The panache mark depicted a water flow that was represented as part of the company’s logo. The Christmas tree gave clue as to the kind of industry the company was working with. Interestingly, the colour contrast of the white Christmas tree and green background matched perfectly to add some final sophisticated touch to the card.

Big thanks to Miguel for inviting me to collaborate and develop this topic for 2wTree blog.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> We never planned to be very ambitious in targets but a recipe for a quiet life around our lovely families for a few months was not the answer for the initial expectations of our time off. We used to read and listen to personal work experiences of well known designers and entrepreneurs as Anton Corbijn or Yayoi Kusama or Steve Jobs, who never were satisfied with the status quo. They wanted to change the things and make things happens. The world has never been changed by unambitious people. We learnt from them that ambitious people have high expectations of themselves and others. They reach for the stars. Although for us the stars are too far to go now but living in Singapore, Machu Picchu (Perú) is likely the furthest iconic place for visiting closed to our antipodes.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> The core skill for our travelling was very simple: listen actively. We can only understand other people if we listen to them. The simple act of listening builds rapport at the same time as building our knowledge of the people we want to influence. Our work experience proves that the great dividing line between stress and pressure is control: people under pressure who still have control over their fate can perform exceptionally well. People under pressure who have no control over events quickly discover stress and burnout.<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> As a general rule, we value what we earn more than what is free. Along our trip we shared chocolates, champagne and stories. The first two have monetary value, the last one has personal values. We learnt that telling stories is a sort of generosity which builds influence and power. The most precious moments in our journey tended to be things like time and recognition shared. We believe that when you give people your time, you are investing your most precious and limited resource in them: people respond to that vote of confidence. When you give them recognition, that is also a vote of confidence in them. Once you have made the investment, you can expect to ask for a return on that investment: most people will give willingly. You have set up the process of give to take. We tried to materialize this process by using generosity. We created our souvenirs from our own visions during the trip. We designed notebooks from our pictures and statements of the <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">visited places and we offered them to our friends. Enthusiastic and proactive friends capable to develop an entrepreneurial mind taking the risk of going out of the comfort area and find the magic of having their own adventures in this wonderful world. Friends who are legless birds working in places far from home like us. We rediscovered our happiness by design and we knew about happiness by generosity.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> Generosity is the art of taking by giving. Generosity is a habit. Fortunately, it is a habit that can be acquired. It is not just profitable to give, it is also enjoyable. Being generous with the personal time appears to be suicidal when there are so many day to day pressures to meet. But by creating a network of alliances, mutual obligations and debts which can be called in, the influences invests heavily in the future. It is an investment which saves time and raises performance in the longer time. And the meaner issues becomes, the easier it is for a selfless and generous person to stand out and become influential.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> For many people, the greatest barrier to success is in their heads. It's time to continue imagining our future beyond the fears and repressions. Time to flight to different places than the original one, to engage with them and simply write our history. It is time for legless birds.

She remarked about the importance to keep learning from our own faults to use them for making our work different. When we finished our conversation she invited me to visit Thailand, a land that I deeply love it, and we work together to create an image that later on we called “We are not as colorful as we think we are”.

An extraordinary work which acts as proof that each individual of the team would feel he or she was undertaking important work as part of an overall vision. A house that inspires innovation and improves architectural concepts that are already there, waiting to be borrow and make them his own. Not so many works have the ability to inspire people to new heights, that is perhaps the greatest strength in this houses design.

Chatibuky is Julia Beamud, an illustrator from the same province in Spain as me, Castilla - La Mancha. She worked as a teacher in School of Art "Pedro Almodóvar" of Ciudad Real. Nowadays though she is based in London. Julia has decided to take a sabbatical so that she can work as a volunteer for a Childrens Charity. At the same time she is also improving her skills by attending design courses, workshops, exhibitions theaters,...and generally trying make the most of the opportunities available to her.

I realized that Chatibuky was not a common name. So when I first started speaking to Julia I wanted to know the origins of the name, and one of my first questions was; What is the story of Chatibuky?

Chatibuky is an evocation of my childhood. My father used to call my mother this word. When he returned from work and opened the door of my house the first thing that he would say to her, cheerfully, would be: Chatibuky!!!. Sometimes he also called us like this. It brings back memories of The sound of the extractor fan in my house, my mother in the kitchen, my brother and me playing in the living room. Chatibuky means to me all these things. It was an affectionate word for my father, so I decided to register as my brand name in 2011.

By choice, I left graphic design about one year or so ago to focused solely on illustration. I wanted to try to do my best at this, but graphic design, and my work as a teacher did not allow me enough time to work as an illustrator. I decided to reject more work in graphic design and do what I really wanted to do. The people who I deal with now are very different. They are people who like my work, and choose to buy it to decorate a bedroom or a living room and they ask me to make some illustrations or vinyl.

As an architect I am really interesting in your design process from the moment that the idea starts until reach an outcome.

I can conceive and develop my projects in any way and any time. The length of the project can be as long as whatever is required by the idea. A simple idea for a project can appear during a train journey, sitting on a bench or working on another project, so I just make notes and sketches and wait until the idea formulates. Ideas are around you, even when you dream, so we just need to know how to see. It is also important to be free of them because they can become overwhelming.

After having a clear vision about one idea, I attempt to develop it using sketches until I feel so involved with it that my concern turns to being about whether it will be a single illustration, a series or something else.

The actual process is another story. The most enjoyable part is doing the sketches to investigate what I am looking for, the wording and the ideas. To Illustrate for other people's ideas is different, the process is closed but equally rewarding.

Explosión Local, a music festival in Ciudad Real, has been the most representative work in this field. Additionally I have done posters for concerts and album artwork. Normally organizers had always a rough idea of what they wanted as it was the case of Explosión Local. First I had to understand the history of the event, next I needed to understand the features in order to start the design process and, of course, it was really important to understand the work previous events in order to maintain continuity.

Sometimes there are surprises that I really appreciate while I am
working abroad. Being in Singapore, I saw once a collection of photos
about a project in Bangkok in a social network of some designer
colleagues from Thailand. That project was called "Plastic Bang!Kok” and was signed by Basurama. Suddenly many questions in my mind due to Basurama is a architects collective from my university, ETSAM (Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain). How did they do to reach to Bangkok with theirs projects? After long searching through my contacts in internet I found one member of this collective working in São Paulo, Brazil. He is Miguel Rodríguez, but he prefers to be called Mister, an architect with one of the minds more curious that I met in my university times and we lost contact for many years. Connection Singapore - São Paulo starts to work using emails and finally I can get answers. Easy What is “Plastic Bang!Kok”?

"Plastic Bang!Kok"
was a proposal for the Bangkok design biennial 2012. We had been
looking for an event which could host Basurama in Thailand with the help
of the Spanish embassy in that country. They also helped us to find a
nice partnership, a good space to work, waste, and a group of design and
architecture students to collaborate in the construction.

In a few days, we displayed on site our technology to transform the
local waste (discarded plastic bags) into four objects of inflatable
architecture to occupy a public space in a collaborative process during
the biennial. In the past two years, we have been experimenting with
inflatable architecture for many reasons. You can use plastic waste,
which is all around, you can create huge and well illuminated spaces and
it only consumes electricity to blow them and it´s a very simple
technology, which everybody can learn and transmit to others. Just
download the Inflatocookbook by Alien Ant Farm y check it!

The necessary way of setting an alternative to that academic ambient, which I consider so obsolete.
It all began as a open festival to create collectively out of waste founded around Madrid and industrial areas in the suburbs. All the creative energy collected in those first editions and the success we got, made us grow and evolute into cultural producers. Three years later we were out of the school organizing all kind of events to think about several topics and create with waste and 7 years later we are travelling all around America doing architecture and design out of waste.

Now you are living in Brazil and it makes me remember my Erasmus
times when I was living in Lisbon, Portugal. Let´s talk in Portuguese
language a little bit.

evolução do grupo.

Due to your words pops up in my mind a place, a huge urban space with two big trees in one side of a square located in Yogjakarta -Indonesia-,
a bohemian city-estate from a western point of view. Many people used
to spend the night there playing with the gap generated per these two
trees. Actually many of your proposals match quite well with that place

resources not only led us to create more sustainable projects,

Due to our comments I remember our first years in
University when the most of us used to think in being an architect
working around world and nowadays many of us are in overseas. It looks
that this global crisis has helped to develop our international skills
faster that we imagined on that time, don't you think so?

I think
that nobody at all could expect what was coming in 2008. We were
instructed to pursue the role of the star system architects, whose
offices were planning the biggest projects in history those years.
Koolhas in Beijing, Norman Foster all around the world, Zaha Hadid,
MVRDV, Herzog de Meuron... All based in the imaginary of architectural
magazines, the development of 'brand cities'.

I felt
that there were these alternatives: being part of the housing industry,
and designing the ugly and industrialized dwellings that caused the real
state bubble, or taking part in the architectural competition system.
Both options were harmful in my opinion. The first one is opposed to
creativity and my idea of a good life, and time has demonstrated that
was unsustainable.
The architectural context was not a better way. It makes everybody
fight against everybody, discarding an outstanding an incredible amount
of work by the 99,9% of the teams competing. The working conditions
generated by that system are completely slavery, and I think they take
many participants to frustration, feeling that they could not be the GOOD ONES.

Let's talk about the origin and
do it in Spanish language.

As per Mister words, all
this interview is just an historical introduction about Basurama
and he really wants to talk about some projects on going that he is
handling now as "O lixo não existe", participatory architectures made from open technologies available in Internet and using resources in anywhere, or "Pan Am", an international mapping about consumer landscapes in America.
